Predicting component failure of 3D-printed metal parts with artificial intelligence

[Translate to English:]

Quickly and flexibly produced: 3D-printed metal parts offer many advantages to industry. Due to their porosity, their behaviour, both under static and dynamic loads, is very difficult to predict. With the help of artificial intelligence (AI) and the combined know-how of materials science and computed tomography, a project team led by RhySearch has succeeded in simulatively determining component failure.

Efficient production of functional samples

In the development of assemblies or systems containing high- and ultra-precision components, the production of prototypes for functional sampling is still of central importance. This is especially true for optical systems. With the desire to support the prototype phase of a development project with the production of parabolic mirrors, Leica Geosystems AG from Heerbrugg therefore approached RhySearch.

Initial operation of a brand-new 5-axis machining centre. Or: How do you mill a mountain?

As an extension to our air-conditioned laboratory for precision manufacturing, RhySearch acquired a 5-axis machining centre in the early summer of 2020 - a "Micro HD" from the company Kern Microtechnik. Now it was time to gain experience with it. To do this, we took on a very special project...

Successful preliminary study: milling prototype lenses from polycarbonate

Lenses for distance measurement sensors, such as those used in time-of-flight cameras, can be only a few millimeters in size. In a preliminary study, RhySearch investigated how prototypes of the lenses can be milled from polycarbonate to validate the optical design as quickly as possible. This allows the function of the lenses to be tested without expensive injection molds.

Support in the selection of the appropriate manufacturing process

Evaluation matrix developed in project

Various manufacturing processes are available for the production of precise workpieces. However, it is not always obvious which one should be used.

In a bilateral project, a manufacturing company was supported in the selection of the appropriate manufacturing process for the production of very small workpieces (dimensions approximately 6 mm x 6 mm x 6 mm) for medical applications. The aim was to evaluate different manufacturing technologies for a new customer inquiry with regard to technological as well as economic criteria and to identify the optimal manufacturing process. Using a comprehensive evaluation matrix, different technologies can now be compared and the effects of a wide range of factors such as machine and tool costs or cycle time can be examined. An important prerequisite was that a methodical approach be applied so that it can be used for further inquiries in the future.

Digitization: Establishment and expansion of the workshop4

The region's industry is successful on the global market with the manufacture and sale of precision machines, instruments and components. In order to master the upcoming digital revolution "Industry 4.0", new models for the precision manufacturing of the future are required. That is why we are currently working with regional companies and our cooperation partners to develop a model workshop called Werkstatt4. This will serve as a modern manufacturing organization - with networked machines, digitally identified workpieces and intelligent control. The University of Liechtenstein will also provide support in developing new business models suitable for "Industry 4.0".

i4Production

A first project on digitalization in the manufacturing industry started in January 2017. As part of the IBH Labs of the Internationalen Bodensee-Hochschule (IBH) RhySearch, together with the Konstanz University of Applied Sciences, the NTB and the Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences, set up the international model workshop i4Production. In this, it was worked out how an "Industry 4.0" process landscape can be designed to be future-proof, efficient and productive. This project is part of the IBH-Labs KMUdigital was approved by the European initiative INTERREG in September 2016. About the activities in the project was reported at various events berichtet. The results were transferred to the model workshop Werkstatt4.
