Visiting: Precision Engineering students from the University of Bern

The students were given an insight into ultra-precision manufacturing in our Ultra-Precision Manufacturing Lab. RhySearch experts introduced them to state-of-the-art manufacturing processes such as diamond turning and high-performance carbide milling. It was particularly impressive to learn that these manufacturing processes can achieve form deviations of less than 0.1 µm and roughness in the single-digit nanometre range.

Practical course in precision metrology
In the Competence Centre for Production Metrology at the Institute of Microtechnology and Photonics (IMP), the students carried out precision measurements in the measuring room. Using state-of-the-art multi-sensor coordinate measuring machines and optical roughness measuring instruments, the students carried out practical work under the supervision of metrology experts. On this day, the students learned how to handle and use tactile and optical micro probing systems. A special feature for the students was the use of microfibre probes with probe element diameters of up to 0.02 mm (approximately 1/5 of the diameter of a human hair) for the detection of micro-features on watch components.
