RhySearch

For our companies, RhySearch is an important hub for new technologies and innovation.

Markus Probst,
President AGV Sarganserland-Werdenberg

Dr.-Ing. Oltmann Riemer

Dr.-Ing. Riemer obtained his diploma in mechanical engineering from the Technical University of Braunschweig in 1992 and earned his doctorate (Dr.-Ing.) from the University of Bremen in 2001.

Since 2005, he has been responsible for research work at the Laboratory for Precision Machining at the Leibniz Institute for Materials-Oriented Technologies (IWT). His research focuses on ultraprecision and micro-machining processes, particularly diamond turning and milling, cutting mechanics, microtechnologies, and the characterization of microtopography.

Dr.-Ing. Riemer is a member of the European Society for Precision Engineering and Nanotechnology (euspen), where he has been a Council Member since 2011. Additionally, he serves on the board of the CC UBOP "Nanotechnology Competence Center for Ultraprecise Surface Machining."

What made you decide to join the Scientific Advisory Board of our research centre?

Since its foundation I have been aware of RhySearch's proven expertise as a research and innovation center. Its focus and emphasis on precision mechanical processing, particularly its application in optics manufacturing, caught my attention. Furthermore, the traditionally excellent industrial environment provides direct connections with applications and users and offers interesting opportunities for cooperation with small and medium-sized companies.

I was fascinated by the opportunity to become part of this network, to actively shape it, and to engage in scientific exchange with other disciplines. The current urgent consideration of digitalization in high-precision production technology as a further pillar of RhySearch represents an additional significant aspect.

How do you see your role in the strategic development of RhySearch? What goals would you like to achieve as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board? Advisory Board of RhySearch? What are your priorities?

First and foremost, I see my role as a partner and observer, critically monitoring ongoing and future research, supplementing it with my own views, and engaging in constructive discussion. In addition to my own German perspective, the European perspective from established networks certainly comes into play here. To achieve this, it is first necessary to better understand and become familiar with the local research landscape and RhySearch's connections to regional partners from industry and academia.
I see a focus on initiating and supporting specific, application-oriented collaborative projects and technological assessment, as well as promoting personal scientific exchange.

Which trends and developments will be relevant for RhySearch in the future? What topics are you most excited about? How can these be turned into opportunities?

Additionally to a fundamental increase in complexity in precision manufacturing, I believe there are three key areas that will in the future also, or even especially, be essential for precision manufacturing and therefore must be taken into account. These are:

first, the material aspect, which includes the development of new materials and their precise mechanical processing, also through new manufacturing technologies. Second, the system concept, meaning the consideration of the entire production chain up to the final product. Finally, digitalisation plays a crucial role, starting at the machine level with instrumentation and extending through to process monitoring and control
